Movie is based on some real facts from a small town Wassepur (near Dhanbad). Basically its about revenge by Sardar Khan (Manoj Vajpai) for his father's killing. Houmour & one-liners are awesome and Manoj Vajpai's performance is fantastic. Blend of folk music with modern at its best.
Movie is a bit lengthy but at the end of day you can't stop talking about it. Must watch for those who want something different.
PS: Movie really contain a lot of raw abusive dialogue.

Brilliant Direction with Mind Blowing performances
Gangs of Wasseypur, movie based on the Coal mafia of Dhanbad, particularly focusing on the rivalry between two communities of muslims, the Quereshis and the Khans and spreads over 3 generations from the pre-independence times to the modern India. The Quentin Tarantino style of Anurag Kashyap brings the well scripted and executed masterpiece filled with entertainment in every scene and detail.
The storytelling which gives us precisely each and every short detail of the characters and the situations and throughout the movie the there is no question left unanswered (except the ending, which will lead on from the sequal). The complex and wide-cast plot is arranged in perfect patterns and each one of the scene as well as the actors give their mind-blowing performances and entertainment. The elements of violence, gore, profanity, sexuality and revenge are all the pillars of the movie's strong uphold.Shahid Khan played by Jaideep Ahlawat, who had impressed us with his skills in movie 'Commando' playing an antagonist, has performed short but flawless piece of his skill as first generation of one family, whose murder gives rise to the Don of Wasseypur Manoj Bajpayee As Sardar Khan, who is son of Shahid Khan and lives to take revenge of his father's murder and keens to destroy Minister Ramadhir Singh played by the director Tigmanshu Dhulia who earlier directed movies like Sahib,Biwi aur Gangster,Haasil and Paan Singh Tomar.Gangs of Wasseypur was the acting debut of Dhulia as well as some other actors like Riccha Chaddha,Huma Quereshi and Nawazuddin Siddiqui,Although Nawazuddin has been seen doing some small time roles earlier but this is precisely his major break.
The whole cast seems to be born-for-this-movie because it fits so perfectly and gives out the best of their skills.Manoj Bajpai has once again proved that he is the powerhouse of acting.Other supporting cast like Richa Chaddha,Huma Qureshi Reemma Sen has done a brilliant performance as the 'Womaniyas' of the movie. Now talking of the wild card of the movie Nawazuddin Siddique who has came out with flying colours as a chainsmoker and drugist son of Sardar Khan and will be carrying his legacy in the next movie,so expectations from him are kept pretty much high.
The 5 hour 20 minutes movie has been divided into two parts and the first movie ends on a very tantalising situation which creates an eagerness in the audience to watch the second part of the movie as soon as possible. But for the first part-brilliant script, brilliant performances makes the saga a must must watch masterpiece.

For a person knowing the truth of dhanbad and wasseypur, the movie is horse shit and full of lies, except for some true scenes, which are countable. Anyways, the movie is based on the real story of Suryadev Singh(as ramadhir singh in the movie), who was a messiah of the poor. Briefly it takes you through the coal mafia running in dhanbad in late eighties(which could have really made it interesting if a bit extended). Enter Sardar Khan and the movie starts revolving around wasseypur, which is a small part of dhanbad(which at that time was pretty large). the direction is good and few scenes from dhanbad itself has made the movie look almost authentic. Language used is the same as used in dhanbad which grips you and the acting along with dialogues are better. Overall watchable movie, but not the true story of dhanbad.

3.5 stars out of five! Entertaining movie.
Gangs of Wasseypur directed by Anurag Kashyap portrays the life of three generations of a Muslim family in the eastern part of India during the second half of the twentieth century. It is a real-story-turned-into-fiction of the gangsters ' warfare in Wasseypur and Dhanbad which are small places in Bihar. It portrays how personal jealousy and struggle to gain political and financial power turns into immense hatredness for each. Personal revenges come into picture as everyone wants to settle scores and multiply the killings.
Sardar Khan(Manoj Bajpai) is the son of Shahid Khan who used to rob trains. As the latter is shown bald swearing in to take revenge for the death of his father who was killed by Ramadhir Singh, the man who had claimed the rights of a coal mine after the Independence. Sardar Khan is a fearsome, clever, gutsy and a big mouth fellow whose cause of living is to destroy Ramadhir and finally kill him to complete his father's revenge.
The movie also comprises of few comedy scenes and abusive punches as one would say where every character makes fun of himself a few times in the movie. The lust of Sardar Khan adds some interest to the viewers. Richa Chadda is at her best playing the role of Nagma Khatun( 1st wife of Sardar Khan). Even she has been portrayed as a gutsy young woman who isn't shy of speaking few f-words. His second wife Durga, has a small role with whom Sardar has one child. Both of his wives are motormouths who don't shy away from speaking the ugliest of a language. The story initially revolves around Sardar Khan trying to firm his business and trying slowly to take over Ramadhir.
The next half witnesses the entry of Nawazuddin Siddiqui who delivers his performance on-screen till that movie. He looks like a typical son of a Gangster with a moustache and fierce looking attire. He is a drugaholic and an irresponsible son but later realizes and turns into a Don Faizal Khan.
Movie is full of violence and abusive language where all the characters can be seen speaking the street slang as often as ever. The music is actually absent in the movie apart from a song Womaniya. Dialogue delivery in way beyond the average mark and hence gives an exciting experience to the viewers. You may need to ask a slumdog for the meanings of some of the slangs used in the movie. The climax is where the movie drags the viewers to the edges and makes curious to know what happens next.
The movie is full of abusive content and advised to not watch with children. It also has adult contents and communal violence and may affect children's ideologies. All in all it is a good movie with a mixture of violence and funny stuff with abusive content at its best. Must watch for young boys aged 18-25.

This movie is a clear indication that there are many genres apart from snow-peak mountains and chiffon sarees which can collect success by attracting masses adopting completely different take .Characters are totally steeped in reality and the portions played by Nawazuddin is pure gold .From the make-up,to the cockiness,to the raw look and location the movie makers has left no stone unturned to create the environment of the desired choice ,as real as possible . The dialogues are witty ,performances are outstanding .The sequels are as authentic as it can get and yiu just cannot wait to watch the other part consecutively .The story tells about how people of that period wants to earn money and right and wrongs are nothing to be considered .Killing is justified and the illegal practices are encouraged by all means .Real acting and different from league is what a movie is all about . #must watch

Classic
Gangs of Wasseypur, featuring Manoj Bajpayee , Richa Chada, Nawazuddin Siddiqui and many more versatile actors, is set when Britishers left India and then how in pursuit of power events took place. Based on a true story, it tells the tale of betrayal, power, infidelity and guns. Anurag Kashyap really did a good job on this two part movie. Filled with agony and gore, brutal murders, abusive language, GoW is no less than any awesome movie.

Classically Mafia-So
this movie is the ultimate outcome of epic story line and the brilliance of parallel cinema. the movie is classically mafia-so and i believe that it would be wrong to say that this movie franchise is India's answer to Godfather. the movie has it all-from corruption to revenge, greed, despair, politics and the most importantly- the Mafia.
the storyline starts in the 1940's and is continues till the 1990's and is setup in in Bihar( Wasseypur and Dhanbad ) with some of the story in Varanasi. The movie revolves around a boy ,Sardar Khan(Manoj Bajpayee) who swore revenge against the local minister Ramadhir Singh(Tighmanshu Dhulia) for the murder of his father and who ends up in becoming the biggest gangster in Bihar. Sardar starts as a small time goon, a messiah for his class of people and the Satan for the rest. he is a lady lover and a stone cold killer.
the acting by the cast and the crew is way beyond realism, the super-realism. the movie is complete masala and action packed. the movie has every bit of cussing words- all the bc's and the mc's and the rest to the daily and most important phrases we use like- "teri kehke lunga" to "beta tumse na ho payega". Acting is beautifully done, sequences and cinematography is sublime and even the songs gives you a pinch of Bihari touch. Overall, just SUBLIME.

An amazing movie by Anurag Kashyap. It is centered on the coal mafia of Dhanbad. The direction and the dialogues are amazing. The movie starrs actors like Manoj Bajpai, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Huma Qureshi as lead roles. The movie has many elements to it. The dialogues are truly off the hooks. From the narration to the acting the movie is of a kind. It has a style of its own. Truly a must watch movie.

Right from its long opening sequence where a gang relentlessly showers bullets and bombs at the haveli of their rival gang, with inhuman intentions to terminate everyone from woman, kids to elderly, Anurag Kashyup establishes the tone, temperament and texture of his gritty gang-war drama. In terms of its story, Gangs of Wasseypur seems like a basic revenge drama. But in terms of its screenplay, there is not a single scene in the film that might give you a been-there-seen-that feeling. It's avant-garde, offbeat and interesting narrative makes it an absolutely riveting experience.
Sardar Khan (Manoj Bajpayee) forms the core of the chronicle, whose only aim in life is to avenge the death of his father by the hands of the capitalist-turned-politician Ramadheer Singh (Tigmanshu Dhulia). The film unveils as his biographical account encapsulating his marriage to Rajini (Richa Chhada), second marriage to Durga (Reema Sen), his rivalry with Qureshi (Pankaj Tripathi) and his butcher tribe and the induction of his son (Nawazuddin Siddiqui) in the gang-war.
With a brief introduction to Wasseypur and its ancient inhabitants, the narrative swiftly establishes its premise, protagonists and their conflicts. The backdrop of coal-mafia gives the film an original and deep-rooted setting. Starting from the pre-independence era, the narrative gradually moves to recent times with vengeance being passed on to generations. Piyush Mishra's voiceover does the major elucidation on the evolution of eras, though at times it's so rushed that if you miss a moment, you could lose a subplot. But then the film has so much and more to say that it has to adapt to a blitzkrieg storytelling technique.
The writing by Syed Zeishan Quadri, Akhilesh Jaiswal, Sachin Ladia and Anurag Kashyap is expansive, elaborate, expressive and inventive. It explores diverse facets of Sardar Khan making his character and the narrative multidimensional. His revenge is brutal, his romance reeks of lust and he has an unapologetic approach towards both. Despite its grim theme, the film also has an inherent sense of humour that comes quite naturally to it from its series of events. The scene where Reema Sen is charmed by Manoj Bajpayee over her daily chores or the one where Nawazuddin goes on a formal date with Huma Qureshi are outrageously hilarious.
As the director, Anurag Kashyup has a distinct vision which augments the writing. The scenes are short in length, several in number and often a series of montages take the story forward. He never has to resort to extraneous elements like stylized entries, editing patterns or camera motions to add to the effect because the story has an intrinsic impact of its own. However that doesn't mean the film falls short of any technical finesse. There's unabashed blood, gore and abuse wherever the scene demands but none of it is forced for sensationalism. Also the film never ventures into the abstract zone that Kashyup's films are often attributed with. This one has mass-appeal without being a potboiler.
