Dobi reviewed Selection Day
Starring Mohammad Samad and Yash Dholye, Selection Day is a story of two cricket prodigies who struggle against their father to play their favourite sport. Considering that not much stuff is made to revolve around sports in the series or shows in Indian entertainment space, except for a few biopics of course, Selection Day is unique in itself and promising too. The acting is great and the show also features the talented Ratna Pathak Shah in one of the key roles. The script could have been a lot better. Better still, it's one the fine specimens of Indian tv shows.

Loveable
Selection Day is an Indian sports web series by Netflix. It is based on the novel of the same name by Aravind Adiga. It follows the story of two brothers trying to make it big into Indian cricket assisted by their cricket obsessed father. Cricket is a game we all know and love but only a few know what goes on behind the curtains, the game is not as pure as it seems. The cast is magical. Every moment you see is every moment you love. Watch this for a realistic depiction of cricket and the politics involved in it, you will connect with characters and become involved in their journey. Selection Day is not perfect but worth your time for sure.

For the cricket Lovers........
This is a coming-of-age story of two brothers, Radha (Yash Dholye) and Manjunath (Mohammad Samad). Their father Mohan Kumar (Rajesh Tailang) -- who will put all dragon mothers to shame -- trains these boys relentlessly, ruthlessly to become the world's best batsmen. At the age of 15, these boys come to Mumbai so that they can play club cricket and be eligible to take part in Selection Day. If they make it to the final three, out of hundreds who come for tryouts, they will be offered professional contracts, a step closer to becoming part of Team India. But things are not that simple. Manju is desperate to get out and chart his own path, but he cannot do so without helping his brother gain independence from their father. After meeting Javed (Karanvir Malhotra) at the new school, Manju explores what it means to have freedom and confidence away from the grasp of his father.

Selection Day is the story of two teen brothers trapped in the mad obsession of their compulsive father. In tracing Radha and Manju’s journey from their village in Madhya Pradesh to becoming star cricketers of a Mumbai school, the first season of Selection Day touches upon several pressing issues—parental pressure, domestic violence, India’s cricket craze, the urban-rural divide, unashamed commercialisation of education, teen angst and homosexuality. But in trying to show it all, it spreads itself too thin, thus failing to create any real impact.
one of the best things about the show is its casting. There is Ratna Pathak Shah as Mrs. Weinberg, a feisty principal fighting a lost battle to save her school—the last living memory of her dead husband—from corporatisation. There is also Mahesh Manjrekar, who plays Tommy Sir, a closeted cricket coach with a murky past and an unrealised dream to train a legend. And finally, there is Rajesh Tailang as the boys’ eccentric father who will stop at nothing to make them what he wants them to be.Though the narrative’s pace is slow, the scenes jump context.Selection Day is a story of cricket and male ambition, and hence has no female characters of any real importance (not in the first season at least) other than Shah’s Mrs Weinberg.
With six episodes of 20 minutes each, the first season essentially lays out the premise and introduces the characters. The field is set, the audience waiting, the players ready. Now all they have to do is deliver.
