Don't go with high expectations
Bombay Velvet is the age old story of 1970s, where a 20 something protagonist arrives in "Sapno ka Sheher" and wants to become "Mumbai ka Raja" overnight. Whether it is Deewar or Satya, basic plot remains the same. However, narrative of the film and screenplay is largely inspired from the west. Bombay Velvet was a personal ambition of Anurag Kashyap. He grew up watching gangster movies, heavily influenced by Martin Scorsese and his genre. He wanted to give a desi twist to Scarface and made Bombay Velvet. I even found the look and mannerism of Ranbir inspired by Al Pacino.
Direction of Anurag Kashyap is above average but there is hardly any scope of marvel with such a cliched plot. Movie is based on a novel, Mumbai Fables by Gyan Prakash. Anurag has tried to show entire novel in 150 min and hence you'll find movie extremely fast paced with tons of characters leaving you baffled. Editing is done by academy award winner Thelma Schoonmaker but I felt she has done a shoddy job this time (or she couldn't cope up with overpowering director).
Ranbir Kapoor has done a good justice to his role but I didn't find his performance anything close to clap worthy. Anushka Sharma was totally wasted in this film and she hardly has any juicy role. I had very high expectations from Karan Johar after watching him in the trailer. He carried off Kaizad Khambata very well in the beginning, but somewhere in between he lost the character and came back to his Koffee with Karan antics. There were so many characters - Kay Kay Menon, Manish Choudhary, Siddhartha Basu that none of them had anytime to show their skill.
Music by Amit Trivedi was a big let down and all the songs were boring. He tried to give it a touch of 1960s Jazz era but couldn't create something as catchy as Kaisi Paheli Zindagani - Parineeta. One team whom I would give full marks for Bombay Velvet is its art directors. It was a mammoth task to create Bombay of 60s and they did it brilliantly with all that razzmatazz.
Verdict - Don't go with high expectations. If you are a hardcore fan of retro gangsta movies Or if you want to see old styled Bombay, you might find it appealing. Otherwise, it is OK to give it a pass.

"Watch it first and then you have the right to criticize."
If there was a list of the misinterpreted movies in the hindi cinema then this film make it own mark in it. May be the bollywood is still not ready to accept the change or the standard of film making in this country is appreciated only when it goes further down.
The film is a dream project of Anurag Kashyap, the man who made cult films like #devd and #gowasseypur. But this film did not had the great fortunes even before its release, poor marketing, unconventional music and the negative publicity film faced on its first day of release, lead to the downfall or you can say it went so low that now it is counted in the most disastrous attempt of this decade.
To be honest people who were criticizing the film were those who didn't even watch it. The film has great actions scenes, amazing cinematography and the screenplay which is much inspired from the likes of godfather.
The unsuccessful run of such films is a bad sign for the movie industry where the crap is accepted by the masses generously.

"Technically brilliant but not quite a velvety viewing experience!!!
The brand name of Anurag and an enviable cast & crew will ensure an encouraging initial at the box office. However, it's unlikely to cater to the taste of the audience due to a lack lustered script as the technical aspects could deliver only to a certain limit. In short, it had the potential to become a landmark movie but falls well short of expectations!!!

There's a reason this film bombed. The pacing -- and the background score, just seemed off to me. The editing of this film is too slow paced mostly, and excessive slow-mo for gun battles rather than giving a breathless fast pace after the quiet.

Ranbir just isn't compelling enough. He's a dumb lug, and then he's brilliant enough to fake a death on the spur of the moment? Karan is mostly okay, but not menacing enough when he needed to be.

Costumes and sets are gorgeous, but the music numbers are COMPLETELY STATIC. Watching a torch song singer stand and belt it out is well and good, but every song was like that. Bombay Velvet's a club, there could have been dancing!! Johnny could have taken her out on the dance floor for cripes sake!

According to the director and actor movie was pretty much average ,in fact disappointing in terms of very basic things like dialogues and screen play. The movie was not all thrilling and exiting, even story was week. Great remorse bocoz of the expectation from Ranbir's movei

This messed up movie doesn't have Anurag Kashyap vibe. But its watchable.

still such a dismall box office take? did people write it off before even giving it a chance? maybe the boring promos and non catchy music was the problem.

Music...definitely yes. The movie starts and music says - Welcome to boredom. Though movie shows time of post independence, but then they have to either keep it short or keep background score interesting.
