Abhay (2019)

Good Enough
It might not score high on plot complexities or mind-bending twists, but it rates off the charts when judged for gory and brutality. With some of the darkest and uncensored criminal portrayals, you can't deny the need of mental endurance to go through even one episode.

Abhay, a committed cop is known to go above and beyond the duty to serve justice. His past encounters have landed him in trouble for serving justice his own way. His performance of a resolute cop is convincing and his good looks sure help his case. Supporting actors, however are a mixed bag some convincing and others weak. Writing and direction manage to establish a vicious and grave ethos, but the cases aren't thrilling and deliver way less than they promise.

A subplot of the murder of Abhay's wife and his paranoia towards his son's safety does offer some help in drawing the viewer back for the next episode. It's a mediocre production with a highly graphic portrayal of inhumanity.

Don't
Imagine its weekend and you decide on watching one of the recently released web series for your entertainment and in the first episode itself you witness psychopaths, cannibalism and what not. Perfect, no? This exact thing happened to me as I innocently started watching ‘Abhay’, a Zee5 original. The show makers decided to experiment with this show by adding a tremendously unnecessary amount of gory factor that might make bile rise up your throat. No exaggeration. The show has great amount of violence and is vile and better left unwatched. The show’s plot is extremely insensitive and can make you blood boil.

Kunal Kemmu plays Abhay, the titular character who’s the head of a Special Task Force. The Special Task Force is tasked with finding out the truth behind a series of disappearances of children in a village. Abhay and his team must fight corruption, ineptitude, cultural morass and several other aspects of human behaviour to find the real killer.
The very fact that someone decided to make a police procedural in India is commendable. That the series is inspired from real life crimes – without going for the over the top way it is handled on TV is better. Kunal Kemmu does a good job of playing the tough cop with a difference. Sandeepa Dhar plays a part of the STF, and she does a good job as well. Of course, only one episode is up for streaming yet, so there’s no word about character graph, etc. The pilot episode also hints at this series being a copy of the police procedurals or the west, where the main investigators have personal problems – which they must break through so they can concentrate on the job.
The series has been touted as being inspired from real events, so the audience might feel cheated. At least the first crime that is depicted has enough material for a whole, full blown series. That the creators decided to dedicate just one, pilot episode will leave true crime disappointed, as well as leaving fiction crime buffs unsatisfied.
Overall, Abhay is an interesting concept that will win over crime buffs.

Abhay is a Zee5 Original web series starring Kunal Khemu in the lead role. It is a crime thriller in which Kunal Khemu plays the role of a cop Abhay Pratap Singh from the Special Task Force. He investigates complicated crime cases which are inspired by true events. He is a brilliant officer who solves every case but has his own internal demons. The concept of this series is very unique and interesting but the execution is weak, the screenplay could have been better. The actors gave a great performance and Kunal Khemu is just brilliant. It is really a dark series with heinous crimes, so it is suitable only for an adult audience. It is now streaming on the Zee5 app.

Banal, mundane, stupid storyline. The trailer itself is hugely boring, with the lead actor struggling to open a stupid red file for 30 seconds straight. Ughh. When will ZEE start making shows based on good content and good acting? Kunal Khemu struggles with the plot and is boring. Skip this if you have watched too much of this genre. The plot could have been honed if not made excellent.

Promising
Abhay is an Indian crime thriller web series by ZEE5. It follows the story of an investigating officer who will take whatever it takes to solve the crime. Kunal Kemmu plays the lead and gets the job done. The writing is very weak, the show depends on everything except writing to keep you watch it. It follows a very cliched done and dusted formula with nothing original. The show is inconsistent, at times it is gripping, at times it is dull. The villains try too much and end up doing nothing. Anshuman Jha does a little something to hold your interest but even his portrayal of the bad guy isn't enough. The show sould not be on your watch-list.
