Twelve Years a Slave is a yet another attempt to depict on-screen the unimaginable horrors of the institution of slavery. What sets the movie apart from other movies centered on slavery in the South such as Django Unchained or Gone With the Wind is its essence of stark truth. There is no Southern Gentlemen getting all noble (with exceptions of Master Ford played by the stunning Cumberbatch ) but a hard hit-on-face reality and inhuman system and an unforgettable shameful history of the so-called glorious American past. Sadism is depicted not as personal but very inherent in the whole system. What makes the plot so authentic is also the fact that it is based on true experiences of a free slave Solomon Northup who having kidnapped and forced into slavery, survives the brutalities and re attains his freedom and after twelve years reunites with his family .The narrative is as powerful as the acting of its remarkable cast and excellent capturing of its producer and director Steve Mcqueen. There are powerful scenes, harsh language and violence beyond imagination that leaves you dumbstruck and in disbelieve. It rips the inner child within you and grows him into extents inexplicable in short span of 2hours! It’s a must( and I stress on it) A MUST for your collection!
