Fate/Zero (2011)

Fate/Zero is an anime series which is the prequel of Fate/Stay Night. Whats unique about Fate/Zero is that the concepts of protagonists and antagonist are so inter- played and in-twinned that it is quite impossible to determine who is who after watching the first few episodes. While the villain is a sadist, the hero is obsessed with the idea of " For the greater good ", which we see eventually backfires for him in the end.

The story of Fate/Zero revolves around the war for the holy grail that grants the wish of the winning magi (one who knows magic). Whats interesting is that the seven magi families summon seven heroic spirits from the past to fight on their behalf. This gives rise an in suppressible debate among the viewers as to whose noble phantasm ( primary magic weapon ) is the most powerful.
