Dustbin reviewed Delhi Crime
The seven-part series, expertly shot, takes us back to the crime that we all wish had never taken place. The word ‘heinous’ took on a new meaning after that December 2012 night, when a young woman was mercilessly raped and mutilated on a moving bus, as her male friend cowered in the front, helpless and beaten.
We all know what happened, and how it happened, because we followed the unflagging media reportage, and witnessed (and, in some instances, participated in) the outpouring of grief and anger which swept the Capital. The citizens of Delhi were forced to shake off their customary apathy, and take to the streets. The brutality of the attack shocked everyone.
Delhi Crime is a fictionalized crime drama, based on the painstaking investigation which led to the capture of the six men who attacked the couple.
The show’s narrative, however, merely positions the protests as an annoying inconvenience that the poor policemen have to deal with. All other characters—protesters, families of the culprits, victim’s kin, media, politicians and civil society—spout synthetic dialogues that help them fit perfectly into the narrative of how the Delhi Police fought a brave battle to nab the culprits and earned very little praise for it.
Delhi Crime gets so desperate to give the police a clean chit that the protagonist of the show, DCP Vartika Srivastav, played by Shefali Shah, is shown brusquely telling the male survivor that since a PCR van has no amenities, the delay in the police spotting them and hence, their getting medical help, is somewhat understandable. The investigating team also includes several station heads and sub-inspectors that make up the ensemble, alongside the Commissioner of Police and the Delhi Chief Minister, who have small roles as the season goes on.
On the whole though, Delhi Crime does a commendable job of showcasing the extremes of India's capital city — the worst and the best — from the heinous crimes committed by the six individuals to the police officers working tirelessly to apprehend the suspects, sacrificing their personal lives in the process.

Hard-hitting!
Delhi Crime is an Indian crime thriller web series by Netflix. It's story follows the aftermath of 2012 Delhi gang rape case. It isn't your everyday crime show where there is a crime committed and a super smart cop solves it within the time limit and is the hero at the end of the day. This is real , involving real people, real details without trivialization. Delhi Crime will hit you in your guts and will mess with your emotions. It goes into gore that makes you wish this was a fictional show. What is commendable about the show is apart from great acting, it is engaging. For a show which is not dramatized, it is a really good feat. Even for adults, this might be hard to watch, you will see the worst of humanity portrayed accurately.

Delhi Crime takes us back to the winter of 2012, a time marked with frustration, pain, and anger in Delhi against the system where the news of the brutal gang rape of 23 year-old Nirbhaya spread spread widely, domestically and internationally, solidifying Delhi’s reputation as the ‘rape capital’. The show will make you revisit the emotions – of anguish, pain and frustration. It is guaranteed to recreate the chill in your spine all of Delhi felt. While many documentries have covered the incident, Delhi Crime has not showcased the incident itself and leaves a lot to the emotion and memory of the viewer. It instead focuses on an an unexplored side of the story – the Delhi Police. While refreshing, it is also problematic. The main character of the show, DCP Vartika Chaturvedi is potrayed as a headstrong officer who would stop to no end to solve this brutal crime and bring justice to the victim and her family. A female character like Vartika is always a breath of fresh air and sends out the message of women empowerment but she never went against the gross statement that a reason for the rape to have happened must be because of getting physically affectionate with her male companion, implying that a woman has no agency and PDA is a valid reason to rape somene. The protesters have been shown as mere obstacles to the investigation, a prop for the show and not as genuine people concerned and angry about the safety of the city they live in. While the police do need not to be completely discounted for their efforts, Delhi Crime goes out of the way to valorise the police

Tear jerking
Remember that cold December evening when one of our sisters was brutally raped? Remember the days that passed after, with protests seeking revenge, seeking justice? I am sure we all do.
Delhi Crime provides us with the back story, shows us how the Delhi Police worked day and night to nab the culprits, how they relentlessly gave up everything else to bring them to justice. This December night has been etched very clearly in the minds of all Indians. We have all lived through the pain. Nirbhaya case is the incident that changed the country, that woke people up to the harshness of our reality.
Delhi Crime details out the entire incident; it does not leave out the gory, gruesome details, so don’t watch it if you are faint hearted. But, if you can, make this the first Indian series that you watch now. Brilliant acting from the actors will make sure that you feel the angst and the anger in your bones as you see it.
