Game Of Thrones vs Breaking Bad.

By Vishnu Ch | 3.2k |

Whenever you hear people arguing about the greatest television show ever made, it all boils down to two choices. Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones. The first thing you have to know is that they belong to two separate genres. One is an intense journey of the psyche of a man pushed to his limit, and the other has dragon eggs and demon babies. They both have carved their pages in the book of television, and pretty long ones in it. With that being said, I am going to do the impossible today. I am going to clear one of them out as the ultimate winner. So, I expect you to read with an open mind and wish me luck. Alright then. Into battle.

1.ACTING CHOPS AND CHEMISTRY:-

Game of Thrones :-

Peter Dinklage has been the star of this stellar ensemble, after season 1 (RIP Ned). Though everyone plays their roles perfectly, the best of them can be boiled down to Peter Dinklage (Tyrion Lannister), Emilia Clarke(Danaerys Targaryen, first of her name, Queen of the Andals and first men, and a few more titles no one can remember), Lena Headey(Cersei Lannister), Nikolaj Coster-Waldau(Jaime Lannister) and my personal favourite, the underrated Alfie Allen(Theon Greyjoy). The actors perform their parts with quiet grace, turning their grey counterparts into real works of art. While the multiple plotlines do not let all their paths cross, they sure do complement each other perfectly in the limited interactions.

Breaking Bad :-

Bryan Cranston leads the cast which includes Aaron Paul(Bitch!), Anna Gunn, RJ Mitte, Dean Norris and Betsy Brandt(Bitch.) with various other stellar roles limited to some seasons. Special mention to Giancarlo Espocito(Gus Fring), Jonathan Banks(Mike Ehrmantraut), and Bob Odenkirk(Saul Goodman). There is not one false beat in their performances. Even really small, thinly written roles (Skinny Pete, yo!) stand out due to their actors. Bryan Cranston easily is the star of the night, delivering a performance for ages while revitalizing his career to new heights.

Verdict:-

While Game of Thrones does do a fantastic job, Breaking Bad gives ample opportunity to its cast to provide interesting interactions and ignite the sparks. Here's where the dense population of Westeros, the multiple plotlines and the fantasy element of Thrones works against itself. Nevertheless, Breaking Bad makes the cut just by a hair here.

2. PRODUCTION VALUES:-

Game of Thrones :-

With a densely populated world with wars, whores, and dragons, George R.R Martin truly has created the perfect playground for a production designer, and boy haven't they nailed it. The magnificent castles and CGI have the flair to be the best of all time. The war scenes can give movies a run for their money. (Battle Of The Bastards. Nuff said.) Thanks to the highest budget on television with a no-holds-barred imagination, they deliver the books to life like no other.

Breaking Bad :-

Most of Breaking Bad's production has to do with symbolism and realism. The highly grounded world carries the grim overtones subtly likes its scripts. While there is not much scope for breathtaking visuals, they still manage to do that with visual poetry.

Verdict:-

Just one word. DRAGONS. Game of Thrones takes this with ease.

3. WRITING:-

Now comes the difficult part. Remember, both are at the top of television history in this regard.

Game of Thrones :-

The scripts are redone from their novel counterparts under the guidance of George R.R Martin until Season 6, when they overtook the books. The plotlines are one of the most massive works of detailing ever seen on celluloid. The multiple plotlines mean the scripts can be given a bit of a leeway i.e. the episode works even if one of them is good enough. Nevertheless, the writers make sure they are taut enough with ample twists and emotional investments. Killing main characters became the trademark of Thrones, and that's a good thing when you think about it. (We miss you Ned, but we understand that you had to go.) The writing never goes below the line, at the same time it never gets better.(Remember this, we'll come back later.)

Breaking Bad :-

The story of a cancer struck 50-year-old as a protagonist is one of the greatest dynamic you can give to a character. Aided by impressive performances, the writers deliver a tale of greed, selfishness, selflessness and blue meth. No subplot seems to be unnecessary. Slow (and boring at times) maybe, but never unnecessary. Relatability is another factor which stands out.

Verdict:-

I want to give this one to Breaking Bad just for its consistency. Game Of Thrones falters at times, but Breaking Bad never made a misstep. Maybe this has to do with closing the show at 5 seasons. Maybe it would have been a disappointment like Season 7 of Thrones. We'll never know. But for now, Breaking Bad wins this one.

4. CHARACTER DYNAMICS:-

Game of Thrones :-

George R.R Martin created a world unlike anything we've ever seen in fantasy. It is densely populated with relatable characters, in a fantasized setting. There cannot be one Thrones' role that can be black or white (Except Joffrey. That A-hole). You can root for them or hate them. Thanks to the cast, they bring out the traits just right and do justice to every role.

Breaking Bad :-

Like I previously said, the dynamic of a cancer struck 50-year-old selling blue meth is unmatchable. On the other hand we have Jesse, who has kind of a redemption story. Skyler White is also written perfectly as the independent woman forced to cope with a monster in the making. Other characters like Hank, Marie, Walter Jr., Mike Ehrmantraut and Saul Goodman shine too. Once again, special mention to Gus Fring, the single most badass role of Breaking Bad after Heisenberg.

Verdict:-

Both the shows have perfectly written roles, but thanks to the population of Westeros, Game of Thrones makes the cut here. Another factor in favor of Breaking Bad is its realism, but the sheer number of grey roles of Thrones take this one.

THE DECIDING FACTOR.

Breaking Bad is the story for ages. It is an elaborate case study of life, blurring the lines of what's acceptable and not. Also, it is the ONLY show in the world that got better with time during its ENTIRE run. Game of Thrones has a similar dynamic, but with the fantasy element attached to it. It also has wonderfully written characters all over Westeros. While there are a few missteps here and there in writing, nothing can be outright labeled bad in this show. It has a transformation story, a love story, a fantasy story, an entire society. In other words, it is Breaking Bad , done on a much larger scale. That takes us to the conclusion and the deciding factor, SCALE. Game of Thrones does almost everything Breaking Bad did, on a much larger scale. No contest, both the shows redefined the quality of television. With that being said... I proclaim Game of Thrones , First of its name, King of the television and tits, Father of killing beloved characters, Breaker of the limits of television, and the heartthrob of fantasy lovers as the GREATEST SHOW OF ALL TIME. Express yourself in the comments below. P.S. Anything can happen in 2019. Comment if you want me to give an updated version of this after Season 8.
