Bang on!
I think this is the very first webseries I laid my hands on and instantly got glued. The thing about bang baaja baraat is that the whole concept of the show sounds very Bollywood-y with a young couple deciding to get married and chaos follows when their families get involved. Very been there, done that idea.

The only difference between this show and a bollywood movie and the reason for it to be a hit is its execution. The way the show is written and the amount of boldness and reality that's attached to it is just simply refreshing and relatable. It makes you sit down and admit it, once and for all that Indian women no longer sit under her veil behind her window curtains and watches her groom arriving. Instead, she struts to him, plants a kiss on her territory, grabs him by the collar and drags him to the altar. And sex before marriage isn't just talked about, it's normalised like brushing your teeth.

The problems facing the couple will make you go "we feel you". Modern life, independent people who have no time for fussy traditions and want to take control over their lives is what makes the couple so life like.

This is India. One side of it is ultra rich and modernised and posh. And the other side still believes that all problems can be solved by some Ganga water. And the children from the two sides get stuck questioning their own values and sometimes, their sanity.

With an amazing cast of impeccable actors, Bang Baaja Baraat is about love, responsibilities, values, bonding and bang. Oh, lots and lots of bang.

Saas-damaad twist!
First of all, can you please get me a husband like Nikhil? Oh wait. You can't. Because he is an angel. The only thing that feels a little too dramatic about this series is the protagonist, Nikhil. He is just too sweet and innocent.

WHAT THE FOLKS is a typical Indian serial concept with role reversal. What I mean is that, instead of saas-bahu chaos, there is saas-damaad chaos. I mean, love. Awfully cute love.

The wife is away in Delhi while the husband has come to mumbai for a few months for work. And guess who stays in Mumbai? The in-laws! The parents are overjoyed and are always extra cautious not to miss any chance to take care of their 'ladla damaad'. It's cute to watch them fuss over him while he gets too shy and gooey.

The most humourous part of the series is way the inlaws try to control their temper even when Nikhil messes things up. And he messes things up a lot, okay! It's cute to see them change their usual attitude and try to adjust with Nikhil while he, oberwhelmed to get such a loving family, tries to grow up.

WHAT THE FOLKS is a twist to the age old stereotypical Indian household but the irony lies right there. The extra care and the extra formalities emphasize the fact that it isn't normal for the husband to stay with his in laws and is always an object of affection despite whatever he does. This show tries to change some of the mindsets while retaining the age old characteristics and emotions. But none the less, it is a breath of fresh air.

What an irony!
Okay. I get what you are trying to do. Women empowerment and all. The men need to enter our shoes to know what it's really like. I get it. But I don't agree with the method applied here. This young man, living in a patriarchial household, wakes up only to find that the tables have been turned. So from then, he faces all the objections and criticisms and hurdles that usually bother a woman. His father is cooking and getting critised on his work, his mother is sizing up a potential suitor for his sister, he is being questioned on returning home late at night and so on.

The idea is understandable. To make a man go through all the womanly troubles. But why does he have to stop being a man?! Why does his father have to act creepingly feminine and why does a girl have to be all macho and offer the guy her jacket on a cold night? It gives the Ki and Ka effect where the man goes through everything a woman has to go through, by behaving like a woman himself. Why? Why complete features of a gender need to change for one side to understand the other? Why can't they try to emphasise the same cause by showing the men doing all the "womanly chores " while being a man! By that I mean not change his features and mannerisms.

While trying to attempt to emphasise gender equality, it enforces the roles that society has confined for women. Like being demure, always needing a man to offer his jacket, always worrying about your daughter's marital skills and being extremely emotional.

Instead of making more men realise the importance of gender equality, this show will make them see more clearly what women are supposed to be doing and exactly why theu can't be in the women's role. Because its not how they talk, or how they walk or how they behave. To understand the value of women, you dont have to magically turn into a woman. You can do by by being who you are. Because you cannot become a woman, and hence, as per the show, you can never understand her.

Women empowerment will remain a dream if our men don't change, not their genders, but their mentalities.

Papa's cool!
WOW. WOW. WOW. And simply WOW. This was a much needed eye opener for Indian parents. Our schools will never grow up, atleast our parents can. An excellent handling of such a delicate issue with a child and making him understand that sex is totally normal. The technique needs a standing ovation. Especially the one where Papa explains masturbation to Pappu by saying, "mein tumhari mummy ke saath cricket khelta hu. Par jab tumhari mummy out of station hoti hai na, tab mujhe kabhi kabhi akele batting karni padhti hai. Usko masturbation kahete hai". Do I already hear the claps?

The idea is out of the world and the moral is commendable. A child, if from from a very tender age, is given the basic sex education, he or she doesnt have to be desperate enough to search for it in all the wrong places. The best thing that this show does is that it normalises sex as a casual household conversation without making it cringy. It takes the humourous side to explain the child which is exactly how he will learn to take it as any other knowledge that he gains on an everyday basis.
If not for the present parents, but it is a must watch for the future parents of my generation. Raise your child right.

Disha Sen reviewed Hello!
Chills on Summer
Two words : Hats off. A bengali webseries that can be THIS good. Sorry, being a bengali myself, I underestimated my own people. I guess that's what happens when you ensemble a group of terrific cast like Raima Sen, Priyanka Sarkar, Joy Sengupta and some brilliant writing and cinematography. The boldness of the content is pretty shocking for such a conservative backdrop of the story. Every scene makes you go, "Wait, what just happened?"

One extra marital affair and one mms starts off this devilish journey towards the truth. The mystery is nail biting and every single scene woven together beautifully. Just over 15 minutes per episode and only 8 episodes long, it's interesting to watch how organisedly the story unfoldes in such a short time span.

If you don't fimd any good reasonto watch the show, watch it solely for gaping at Raima aka Nandita. She is a marvellous sight in the attire of a typical 'Bonedi barir' bou, mother of two and a loving wife. And Priyanka is a ball hit out of the park with Nina, the other woman in Anonyo's life. She has compelled me to hate her with every fibre of my being. That's how strong her performance is.

The ending, though I am not so sure, will be how many people's cup of tea. Though it was my cup of tea, it fell a bit flat compared to the amount of excitement it had created previously. But I am ready to overlook that just because the the entirety of the show is such a thrilling ride.

Set in the backdrop of durga pujo, it brings out every flavour of both urban and old school Bengali. So if you are a bengali, watch it to excite that inner feluda in you or just simply because it will give you the 'pujo pujo feel'. And if you are a non-bengali, then watch it to marvel at the wit and intensity that a bengali posseses. And ofcours, for Raima.

We love Mickey Bhaia
Yet another love story with the same old problems of family, wedding, babies, moving in and handling it all. This webseries has a been there, done that feel. But you know what, I will still watch it if a few more episodes are added there. The simple reason being it says the same story without making it at all boring. The twists and turns coming into the couple's life might not be too relatable but they are extremely fun to watch.

The best part about the show is Mikesh, or our very loving Micky bhaia, as referred to by his loyal broker/driver/companion Tiwari. Both these characters add to the funny element of the show. Mikesh is an extremely loving boyfriend, a bit stupid, a lot innocent and way way too adorable. Just like any other boyfriend, he is extremely polite to his girlfriend's family and is always making sure to have a good connection with them and he is a winner at it from the go.

Tanya is a regular girl who is just not sure about her extra caring boyfriend and the early marriage talks in the family and weighs in her options. She is just like one of is who is slightly lost sometimes.

Overall, it's one hell of a watch and one thing that this show never fails to do is keep it's viewers on their toes.

It's all the little things
Where should I even begin with this one? Is live-in supposed to be so cute in India? Aren't there supposed to be some boldness shown, or backlashes or family troubles or anything that can normally happen if you live in together in 21st century India?

Maybe there is all of the aforesaid problems coming in their way, but thjs show is not about them. It is about the little things that happen between the big shots that makes two people stick together despite all odds. The only problems worrying them are that either they miss out on the bhajis before they woke up late or one of them loses an earring or they are up till 3am and hence they r late to work or there is a competetion every morning for who gets to shower first or that it's sunday and they have no idea what to do. There you go. I have you some spoilers. But as it's clear to you, you still wanna watch the episode because even without the spoilers, you knew that those were some of the negligible things that happened between you and your partner on a daily basis. And that's the beauty of LITTLE THINGS. The entire show is a spoiler but you still want to see it just because it highlights the beauty of the small things in life that we often forget to appreciate.

Dhruv is a struggling techie and Kavya is a columnist. Yes. That's you or me or that guy living next door or that girl sitting next to you or any random millennial you spot on the road. It's us. And it's our story. Just told in a better way for us to see that all that truly matters lie in the little things. Watch it to get back that missing smile on your face.
