Simply delightful
After putting out consistently awful content for far too long, Netflix finally offers a pleasantly engaging experience with ‘Taj Mahal 1989’. Delightful performances take center stage and even when the script struggles, there is enough charm in the production design to keep one hooked.

Love is a tricky subject but we get to see a lot of its shapes and forms in the show. For Sarita (Geetanjali Kulkarni) and Akhtar (Neeraj Kabi), love is elusive and nearly lost. The passion in their relationship is long gone, and an empty marriage haunts their future. While for Rashmi (Anshul Chauhan) and Dharam (Paras Priyadarshan), love and lust are synonymous. For Angad (Anud Singh Dhaka), as he cleverly puts it, “love is nothing but the choices available”. Writing at times is poetic and soulful, the other times sappy, much like the character development, which is also a hit and a miss.

With enough romance, wit, humor, substance and drama, ‘Taj Mahal 1989’ is a rather out of the ordinary show that will keep you entertained.

Taj Mahal 1989 indulges drama to take various forms, from apperance in romance to overally dramatic comedy.

This series unfolds in the city of Lucknow, where various couples of different ages share their love story and the bitter sweet moments that go into that journey. Akthar and Sarita who both teach different subjects in the same lucknow college, started their courtship during their own college days. After several years of being together they struggle keeping their flame from burning out. The next couple Sudhakar a philosophy gold medalist and Mumtaz a former sex worker, find their way through society's harsh judgemental words. Then there are the couple's from college who try to balance their career and love for each other hoping that they don't change on their path there.

Keeping romance as the main plot, the movie bring about important societal and political issues this country faces as sub plots.May it be threatening a voice or sex trafficking. Full of satire, this series with just seven episodes will leave you curious of where the paths they chose lead them. Moving along there is a definite charecter and relationship development witnessed, and it draws fine a line between when humour needs to be used and when a strong message must be delivered. The thing I loved the most was the the disciplined attention to details which ate rarely found in Netflix hindi original shows.Definitely a must stream.
