The show is both titled after and stars actor-comedian Martin Lawrence along with supporting characters Tichina Arnold, Thomas Mikal Ford, Carl Anthony Payne II, and Tisha Campbell. Reflecting the rising popularity of the Fox network throughout the 1990s, Martin was one of the network's highest-rated shows during the sitcom's five-season run. In contrast to the popularity of NBC's "Must See TV" on Thursday nights in the 1990s, many African American and Latino viewers flocked to Fox's Thursday night line-up of Martin, Living Single, and New York Undercover. In fact, these were the three highest-rated series among black households for the 1996–1997 season.

02 May '96On their anniversary night, Martin & Gina are preparing to celebrate a night of quiet romance, when they are interrupted by Tommy and the gang. An argument breaks out over a suitcase that was loaned to Martin, and results in Tommy and Martin not speaking to each other, and eventually deciding to end their life-long friendship. Martin is determined not to have Tommy in his life as a friend, until Cole comes by to deliver some bad news. This is the first of a 2-part episode.

02 May '96A major car accident has put Tommy in the hospital. Martin and Tommy had not been speaking to each other. Martin and the gang rush to the hospital to check on their injured friend, but find the man in the room in a full body cast. Martin, now sorry for the feuding, sobs at his bedside and vows to renew the friendship. But can Tommy really hear his plea?
