This was my first Bollywood film I ever watched - renting it on DVD from Netflix years ago because of its Oscar nomination.

Finally, I was able to watch it again. I purchased it from India, not realizing the disc was PAL format. Tried several things, and finally bought an inexpensive region free DVD Player, yes, just to watch this movie again.

It was worth it. It's just as wondrous as I remembered -- and just as bloody long. You certainly feel like you've lived through three days of cricket playing.

The soundtrack is one of A R Rahman's absolute best. Aamir Khan is completely in his prime and just fantastic in this. The story of a group of villagers agreeing to an arrogant British soldier's wager to play a cricket max or pay triple their yearly tax (Lagaan) is gripping even at the extended length. I watched it over two nights this time. Even though I don't understand cricket, you are always caught up in the tension of the game. One of the best sports movies I've ever seen.

My perspective has changed in the over a decade since I first saw it. I know recognize that deep narrator's voice as Amitabh Bachchan, and know many of the supporting players from other movies.

This is a movie everyone should watch at least once in their life. One of the all time greats. Aamir, for the love of all that is holy, release it on Blu-ray for the 15 year anniversary!

I decided it was time to finally see Maine Pyar Kiya. OMG. I almost cannot believe how good looking Salman was back then. He was not that puppy nice boy he was in HANK. You know who he actually reminded me of? James Spader, Pretty in Pink era. It's that 80's era feathered hair and that rich boy swagger. But James Spader never did one armed shirtless pushups. Yowza.

The ending had SO MUCH CRAZY!! I was crying out "Oh my God" out loud! He goes after the kidnapped girl on a BIKE" and rams it into the truck"

First, it was quite something to see Alok Nath young and fit enough to be in a fist fight! I'm used to him being the very pudgy father.

But Mohnish Behl as Jeevan the villain was just wild. Raping and being all evil laugh villain! Crazy to see him that way.

The heroine was okay, but she doesn't sparkle for me like a Rani or Kajol. But Salman has so much charisma in this film! It was off the charts! I can see how he took Bollywood by storm. What a lead debut for him. His acting wasn't bad, either.

I can certainly see why that was such a blockbuster. Some MAJOR sampling in that soundtrack! I could hear the Love Story theme slightly, very slightly altered and of course Final Countdown!

This London set Romantic Comedy has some enjoyable moments. It's very different for a Bollywood film -- no parents or extended families, just a large group of friends working and living together. Sid's number is accidentally posted on a Suicide hotline flyer but when one girl calls he keeps her on the phone all night. Night after night they talk, and one day she comes into the book shop where he works. He carries on a double life, encouraging her on the phone to meet and make new friends. Madhavan has an extended cameo as her arrogant ex-boyfriend.

John Abraham is incredibly sweet in this wearing glasses and just as I was thinking how he was acting like a bumbling Clark Kent, the joke was made in the movie. There were some enjoyable twists in the script, too, but some of the acting was just not the best. Enjoyable just to see Madhavan and John Abraham play very different roles than their usual ones.

A Tamil rendering of Sense and Sensibility. Somewhat disconcerting that Tabu and Aish's voices are dubbed by Tamil actresses. Aish's dubbed voice is so high pitched it almost sounded like baby talk.

The story really worked in the Indian setting. My favorite was the actor playing the Major, MamMooty. In this retelling, he is not only older than Aish's character, but has lost a leg in war. Aish was vivacious and her dance numbers were great.

Tabu was wonderful as the older sister, but the reason for her rejecting her suitor == that she thought HE thought she was bad luck didn't really work for me.

Very enjoyable film.

I have a Roku, and one of the weird free channels is called Indie Crush. It had the documentary about Omi Vaidya, the NRI villain of 3 Idiots. These friends of Omi's from LA followed him to the premiere of 3 Idiots and caught that exact moment when an unknown became a star. They faked press passes for the red carpet, and then stayed to film all the way till his debut and comedy win at the Star award ceremony. It was wild to see the craziness of 3 Idiots take over India day by day.

I loved how Omi told the story of auditioning for the film on a whim for one of the leads, and his Hindi was so bad that they just stopped him. But then said, come back tomorrow, we're writing another character that you might be right for. Then they loved how he emphasized not knowing Hindi well and warned him NOT to learn it so that it would stay just as funny in the film. After the premiere, you see him working with a Hindi tutor trying to learn Hindi so he can speak at all the crazy events.

Omi was born in Palm Springs and his mother's family is from Goa. He spoke really no Hindi, and as you saw in his biopic on IMDB had had lots of small roles in things like The Office. Just the funny Uber driver or whatever. He couldn't get traction in LA, and while visiting India, tried out for 3 Idiots -- for one of the leads, mind you. He was perfect for playing the snobby NRI -- who doesn't know Hindi well enough to get the word substitution joke. The doc plays clips from 3 Idiots and they explain in detail why what he said in the big speech was so funny.

He also seems to just be the sweetest guy. His wife was a PHD student in LA during the whole 3 Idiots thing, and they show him a few years later at his house in LA, where he loves being anonymous compared to the craziness in India. He flies back and forth to film in India while she completes her studies. But I saw on IMDB that he's doing some sort of Brown People TV series here which should be interesting.

Also, the doc tries to explain and define Bollywood for the audience (they show clips of Aamir doing song numbers and so on), Aamir defines it, and Omi's father describes it as being like I Love Lucy -- larger than life. I think besides spending time with the sweet Omi -- it's worth seeing just because they really show what Bollywood is, and how crazy a world it is, and how HUGE it is.

I admire it, but I didn't love it.

I thought the acting was all great, and I really did love Aamir in this one, but I can't see myself wanting to watch it over and over again.

Spoilers ahead --

It's hard for me to see that they chose killing the minister rather than -- I don't know what exactly they could have done to get press coverage, but something. Maybe just commandeering the radio studio without killing people?

It's just hard for me to get past that, I guess. I don't have the experience of people in India with that feeling of helplessness at the rampant corruption, so maybe I am just naive. But I have personal experience getting press coverage for something, so it's harder for me to get past their fallback to violence after the police break up the candle vigil. I know what I would have done -- held press conferences at the hospital talking about the mother in the coma -- I mean, come ON that is made for TV coverage. And the British white girl who is so fired up never suggests something like that? Now she is all passive and silent?

I liked the sepia flashbacks, and the older patriots welcoming the young ones to heaven or what have you. I particularly liked Sharman Joshi in this. What happened to him? He did this and 3 Idiots and then"?

It's trying to be a Clueless/Emma remake and it mostly worked for me. I kind of have a soft spot for Abhay Deol. And Sonam is winning me over. She was annoying to me in Khoobsurat, but being the fashion plate Emma is pretty perfect for her.

The ending though where she makes the speech? Meh. I can't completely remember the ending of Clueless, but I don't think Aisha measured up. What works better for Aisha than Clueless is the arranged marriage background and more class divisions inherent in India.

I just heard an interesting Podcast with The Bollywood Project girls that talked about Aisha. Sonam and her sister produce these movies under her father's company. They borrowed all their friends' clothes for Aisha and it is really a movie about female friendships more than Aisha's romance with Abhay. So unusual for Bollywood film being female focused. It's not a GREAT movie, but admirable for that.

I went to see this movie with a friend and we knew it was going to be bad going in, but oh, my goodness the first half is awful. People have talked about Siddarth and Jackie Schroff's performances, but I put most of the blame at the feet of the director and the editor. The first half, setting up the dramatic conflict, is so SLOW. Scenes that could take a minute take five. Jackie Schroff stumbles around taking forever to get across the point that he a drunk schmuck. I didn't think Siddarth was that bad -- but he sure wasn't given many lines to work with.

The fight scenes were effective in the second half -- mostly because there is no more perfect actor to play a mixed martial arts fighter in Bollywood than Akshay Kumar. None. But the editing -- again!! Between the semi-final fights and the final battle between the brothers there is not one single millisecond of breather, or a down time emotional beat. WTF? This is Bollywood, and you lollygagged through the first half to make this a three hour movie, and you can't give even one MINUTE for the audience to take a breath and give us a a second to let the impact sink in? And the ending could have had more emotional punch, too.

I haven't seen Warrior, the original movie with Tom Hardy and Nick Nolte on which Brothers is based, so I can't speak to what changes this script made. I have heard however that in Warrior you don't know who to root for in the final fight. In this movie, there is no question you want Akshay to get the money for his kid's treatment. The reason the brothers aren't speaking and battling is weak, and we don't really understand Monty (Siddarth's) motivation.

The two women in the film are excellent however. Jacqueline Fernandez I'm not sure I've seen before, and she was very good as Akshay's wife. I bow down to Shefali Shetty, who plays Jackie Shroff's wife and the boys' mother. She commands the screen in every scene she is in and packs an emotional punch -- just as she did in Dil Didakhne Do. She is just SO good. I whispered to my friend that she was 1000 times better than this movie.

It's hard to believe this is the same director that gave us Agneepath. What happened with this film? It would seem to be tailor made for Bollywood melodrama. Did Lionsgate interfere too much? Were there too many cooks in the kitchen? All the energy I could see was put into making the fight scenes great -- and they were, and much more realistic than much of what we see in Indian films. But you need to work on the story and pacing, too, guys!

Rewatched on Blu-ray which was a revelation. I felt like I could count every bead and sequin -- and the embroidery!! The wardrobe was stunning on Blu-ray.

Watched this after dropping off my son at college, and I sobbed harder than SRK or Hrithik! The ending always gets me, but it really hit me hard when the mother sees SRK in the mall after 10 years.
