The Money Pit Plot
After being evicted from their Manhattan apartment, a couple buy what looks like the home of their dreams—only to find themselves saddled with a bank-account-draining nightmare. Struggling to keep their relationship together as their rambling mansion falls to pieces around them, the two watch in hilarious horror as everything—including the kitchen sink—disappears into the Money Pit.

This is supposed to be a remake of Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House, but really in basic premise only. I wasn't expecting much, but Tom Hanks' reactions to everything going wrong around him really gives me more appreciation for his comedic talents. From his maniacal laugh, what he does to pass the time when trapped in the ceiling, his one liners and all the small character interactions in between. The stuff that works the least are the big attempts at comedic set pieces. The movie doesn't descend into the comedic-why-god-why-is-this-happening-to-me despair that usually accompanies these kinds of everything that can go wrong will go wrong type comedies and for that I'm thankful. |
