Martha Marcy May Marlene Plot
After several years of living with a cult, Martha finally escapes and calls her estranged sister, Lucy, for help. Martha finds herself at the quiet Connecticut home Lucy shares with her new husband, Ted, but the memories of what she experienced in the cult make peace hard to find. As flashbacks continue to torment her, Martha fails to shake a terrible sense of dread, especially in regard to the cult's manipulative leader.

Saw the premiere at Sundance and had no idea what it would be like. An unbelievably creepy story of cult indoctrination and attempted escape and assimilation to "normal" life. John Hawkes plays the cult leader in a tour de force.
I was very impressed with Elizabeth Olsen in this, her debut film. I liked the ambiguous ending -- I hope that the ending I saw at Sundance remained in the theatrical release.
My husband, however, despised this film. |
