Along the way, new fairy tale characters and old search for true love, find adventure and once again take sides in the struggle of good against evil, as classic tales are once more twisted and reimagined.

The third season of the American ABC fantasy-drama Once Upon a Time was announced on May 10, 2013. The premiered on September 29, 2013, with the plot revolving around the main characters travelling to Neverland from Storybrooke to retrieve Henry Mills. The series will feature crossover episodes connecting with the spin-off Once Upon a Time in Wonderland. The season will be split into two parts, with the first eleven episodes airing in Autumn 2013 and the latter half returning in Spring 2014. New characters appearing this season include Ariel, Prince Eric, Tinker Bell, and Peter Pan.

These numbers sunk to a series low of 7.08 million viewers in February 2013, but remained stable above 7 million throughout the remainder of the season with a season finale viewership of 7.33 million and a 2.3/7 adult 18-49 rating/share.

Verne Gay of Newsday said the series "glows with a near-theatrical shine, challenging viewers to think about TV drama as something other than boilerplate." The pilot episode was watched by 12.93 million viewers and achieved an adult 18-49 rating/share of 4.0/10. Those numbers dipped late in the season to a series low of 8.36 million viewers and a 2.8/8 adult 18-49 rating/share in April 2012, but rebounded slightly for the season finale with 9.66 million viewers and a 3.3/10 adult 18-49 rating/share.
