Produced by the BBC in seven episodes, it is the second such adaptation for television of the novel. It was directed by Anthony Page from a screenplay by Andrew Davies, and starred Juliet Aubrey, Rufus Sewell, Douglas Hodge and Patrick Malahide.

Dorothea Brooke marries Reverend Casaubon against her family's wishes. Fred Vincy, the mayor's son, gets in debt and must ask for help of the parents of the girl he loves.
