The killing of a local accountant leads DCI Tom Brannick and DS Niamh McGovern into a web of intrigue surrounding the accountant’s widow, Olivia Foyle.

The search for Robert Dardis leads Tom to an abandoned house, where he takes advantage of the unfolding situation to deceive his colleagues and try to find out more. However, a heated confrontation leads to a fatal mistake. Tom's relationship with Olivia deepens, as each recognizes the value the other has in their search for gold.

Birdy steps into the breach and helps Tom to interview Olivia. Jackie is suspicious, and the accountant’s children have only negative things to say about his widow. Tom and Olivia work together outside the official police investigation as their search for the gold forges a most unsavoury alliance.

Tom and Olivia’s relationship has assumed a dangerous intimacy. Meanwhile, the relationship between Izzy and Birdy has been uncovered by his fellow officers, and Olivia is dealing with the appearance of ruthless American gangster, Ryan Savage.

Tom moves fast to cover up the incriminating evidence. His rage takes him to Olivia’s house, where he arrests her and bundles her into his car. But Olivia talks him out of drastic action, and presents him with an ultimatum.

Tom moves the pieces into place for the final reckoning, as he and Izzy go to sign the documents for the purchase of her new house. The line Tom walks between his legitimate investigation and that which is off the books grows wafer thin, and he is drip-feeding Jackie and Niamh the necessary information that won’t get in the way of his illicit pursuit of Olivia, the murder weapon and the gold.
