Best R-rated Comic Book Movies Other Than Deadpool

By Arindom Deka | 4.4k |

The recent success of Deadpool has finally opened the doors for more mainstream R-rated comic book movies. Now we have a new R-rated Spawn reboot as well as there are rumors about the Sony Venom movie and the next Wolverine movie to be R-rated as well. We are even getting an R-rated Batman v Superman movie, even though it will be only available as a Director’s cut in Home Media.

But Deadpool was not the first one. It’s just another one out of a bunch of others which are equally good and arguably even better. Deadpool just happened to work because of it’s great marketing campaign and the hardwork that was put on by the whole crew especially Ryan Reynolds who was behind this project from such a long time.
Nevertheless, this is a list of some of my favorite R-rated comic book movies which I feel need to be mentioned, because most of them have been pretty unsuccessful despite being really good. Now just to make it clear this is my personal opinion. Some movies might not be mentioned here, maybe because I didn’t really like them or because I haven’t watched them. American Splendor, Ghost World and Ichi The Killer are three of the movies that I have heard about but never got a chance to watch them. And another movie 'Wanted' is very popular but I am not really a big fan. This is my personal Top 16 best R-rated comic book movies of all time. So let's kick-off.

16. 30 Days of Night

Vampires now have become a joke. When we think of them, all that comes to our minds are the jokes related to Twilight. 30 Days of Night reminds us how terrifying these creatures can be. The story is based on Alaska, where there is a perios during the winters when there is a month-long polar night. A sheriff (Josh Hartnett) and a bunch of survivors must battle a coven of deadly, bloodthirsty vampires who are out there looking for prey and this month-long moonlit nightfall. Yes, the movie does have a few problems of it's own but it still manages to scare the hell out of you. The depiction of night is perfect and vampires have never looked so scary.

15. The Punisher

Yes the Thomas Jane version and no I am not crazy. I happen to like this movie despite it's flaws. Why? Because Thomas Jane was good as Frank Castle. Definitely better than Dolph Lundgren and Ray Stevenson. And I think if he got another shot at it with maybe a good director, he might have been pretty good. The movie's main flaw lies with the antagonist, played by John Travolta, who was terrible. But apart from that I did enjoy this movie for what it is and I do think the story isn't that terrible. Hopefully we got to see another incarnation of Frank Castle, this time portrayed by Jon Bernthal and he is definitely the perfect Punisher.

14. Super

Rainn Wilson as a superhero can only sound good in a comic sketch. And yes this movie is a comedy, Wilson still does a pretty good job of showcasing his dramatic chops. This James Gunn directed movie is about a good-for-nothing doofus (Rainn Wilson), who loses his wife (Liv Tyler) to a charismatic villian (Kevin Bacon) and so he decides to become a costumed superhero even though he has no powers of his own. Sounds kinda similar to Kick-Ass? Well then you're not the only one. But it's still has a great story and Ellen Page might be one of the best sidekick to ever live.

13. The Crow

I know this is a cult classic and it being so low in my list will definitely piss off a lot of people. But I just don't think it's better than the other movies that I have watched. Yes it might have inspired Nolan's The Dark Knight but I still think it's just a good movie. I do adore this movie. It's a classic revenge tale and the way it's told is superb. The movie has spawned a lot of sequels and they all look terrible. But this one is definitely worth a watch.

12. A History of Violence

Well many people will argue that it might be the best movie in the whole list, and I might agree to some extent but the list is from the standpoint of the execution and how much they were able to bring in from the comics. Despite that, it is a brilliant movie. The performances by the cast is outstanding .Viggo Mortensen proves why he is one of the best actors of Hollywood with this movie. The movie is a about a small town restaurant owner who may or may not have a dark past. The movie has some great action sequences especially the diner fight scene.

11. Road to Perdition

It has Tom Hanks in it. And it's directed by Sam Mendes. This is another revenge drama about a mob enforcer, played by Tom Hanks who goes on a quest to avenge his dead family along with his son. The movie also stars Daniel Craig, Paul Newman, Stanley Tucci who were great and a standout performance by Jude Law. Director Mendes successfully brought this comic book to life with it's gorgeous settings and detailed shots.

10. 300

"This is Sparta!' People can make as many jokes about the abs, the oily muscles but everyone will agree that this is one of the most quotable movies of all time. It's action sequences, visuals are all incredible. And we all have to admit it, whenever we think of Gerard Butler we think of King Leonidas. He was born to play this role. Zack Snyder is a master of visuals and action sequences even though his stories lose their way.

9. Kick-Ass

This movie is so good. I really adore this movie. It is one of the funniest movies of all time. The cast is superb. Probably Aaron Taylor Johnson's best work till date. Also not to forget Chloe Grace Moretz and Christopher Mintz-Plasse. And one of the best performaces by Nicolas Cage in years. This movie brought Matthew Vaughn to the limelight who went to make other great movies. The movie is quite similar in concept to Super but this one is executed much better.

8. Blade and Blade II

Well I have decided to put both of them together because I don't really know how to differentiate between these two. I love them both. They both have their flaws as well as their own good qualities. The first one probably paved the way for darker comic book movies and the second one is a Del Toro classic. It stars Wesley Snipes as the titular vamipire hunter Blade and the idea does sound terrible but it worked so well. Even though it didn't really work so well the third time.

7. V for Vendetta

One word. It's a cinematic spectacle. Everything in this movie is so amazing. The explosion scenes, the fireworks, the performance by Hugo Weaving as V, the domino scene, V's opening lines! It's all perfect. The only problem I had with this movie was Natalie Portman's performance which I really disliked. Other than that it's near perfect for me.

6. Kingsman: The Secret Service

From the trailers I thought this will be a Kickass meet James Bond parody. But who expected Colin Firth to ever be an action hero in a movie! This is such a mind-blowing surprise. It had so many things that could have gone wrong but it was so perfect. Taron Egerton is definitely the next superstar. Samuel L. Jackson is a great villian and Colin Firth is badass! The church shootout scene is enough to prove that

5. Sin City

Another cinematic spectacle. This, for me, is the best movie Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez has ever made. It's a mindblowing film noir and has a perfect cast. Almost everyone in this movie was perfect in their roles. Especially Mickey Rourke, in maybe his best career performance.

4. Oldboy

Based on the manga, this is a masterpiece. And I am not talking about the bad Spike Lee version, I am talking about the classic South Korean version directed by Park Chan Wuk. Talk about twist, this movie has one of the best twist of all time. And inspiration! The hallway fight scene which have inspired Serbaun maut as well as Netflix's Daredevil and many other iconic movie fight scenes.

3. Watchmen

The Zack Snyder. This movie is a great example of a comic brought to life. The opening credit scene, the opening fight scenes and Jackie Earl Haley's Rorschach! It's all perfect. Yes many people do have a problem with it's pacing but it doesn't really bother me at al. It's another visual masterpiece filled with great action sequences as is alwasy expected from Snyder.

2. Deadpool

Yes it is in my list and it's a near perfect movie. This movie deserves so much credit. It had a really talented director Tim Miller who was so passionate in the project and the perfect Deadpool in Ryan Reynolds. The action in the movie is so good and the breaking of the fourth wall in the movie is perfect. The cast of the movie was also pretty solid especially Ed Skrein's portrayal of Ajax for me, which I thought was a great Marvel villian in a movie seen in a long time.

1. Dredd

Last but not the least, Dredd. This was a surprise when it was released. It was such a great action-packed thrill ride. The movie is really underrated and also the lead actor Karl Urban isn't given much credit. He is incredible as the badass law enforcer and so was Lena Headey as the antagonist Ma-Ma. It is a sad fact that this movie might never get a sequel because it definitely deserves one.
So that was my complete list. Most of the movies went out of people's radar. If you haven't watched these movies, then surely give them a watch.
