2017: Looking Back To All The Superhero Action Movies

With just a few days until new year, lets look back to all the Live Action Superhero films of 2017. With 6 releases in 2017 and all of them earning at least $600 million, it is safe to say that it has been a great year for the genre. Infact 4 in the top 10 highest grossing movies are live action superhero movies In terms of content, 4 of the movies released this year are among the top 10 superhero movies of all time(5 if you count The Lego Batman Movie but it is not a live action film).

1. Logan - March 3, 2017

Hugh Jackman’s final outing as the Wolverine the character he played for 17 long years leading him to become synonymous to Wolverine for an entire generation was an emotional affair and a responsibility for director James Mangold to get the movie right. And so, it did with Logan becoming the Second highest grossing Superhero movie earning $626.8 Million. Critically, it is the highest rated X Men movie till date, with a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is listed among the best superhero movies ever made on Rotten Tomatoes.

2. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2- May 5, 2017

Directed by James Gunn, the Guardians of the Galaxy kick started MCU’s year in great fashion, making around $836.6 Million becoming the 6th highest grossing movie of the 2017. It also brought out the $11 Billion earning mark of the Marvel Cinematic Universe becoming the first to do so. Vol 2 has a 83% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and is quite a light hearted movie with its share of action sequences.

3. Wonder Woman - June 2, 2017

Gal Gadot returns as Wonder Woman in its solo movie after an impressive performance in Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice. It also has the first female director of a live action comic book based movie in Patty Jenkins. The movie was thought to be a new beginning of the DC Cinematic Assembly after poor reviews of both Man of Steel and Batman Vs Superman: Dawn of Justice after being well received both with a whopping 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Wonder Woman became the 2nd highest grossing DC Cinematic Assembly Movie with $821.9 Million and is the 8th highest grossing film of 2017. Wonder Woman also holds the record of the highest grossing female directed movie ever.

4. Spider-Man: Homecoming - July 7, 2017

Jon Watts brings the Marvel Cinematic Universe Spiderman after the Sony Marvel deal with Tom Holland returning as Spiderman, after a small role in Captain America: Civil War, in its own superhero movie showing the struggles of Peter Parker to blend in the normal school environment after the events of Civil War. The movie was a commercial and critical hit with an earning of $880.2 Million making it the 4th Highest Grossing movie of the year and the highest grossing superhero film of the year. It also has an approval rating of 92% and was deemed fresh despite being the third reboot of the character.

5. Thor: Ragnarok - November 3, 2017

Chris Hemsworth returns with Mark Ruffalo and Tom Hiddleston as Hulk and Loki respectively in the third installment of Thor. Director Taika Waititi makes a bold, fun filled and funny Thor movie with Thor losing both his trademark Hammer and long blonde hair. Cate Blanchett as Hela the goddess of Death gives a really strong performance. The movie was refreshing critically and commercially acclaimed with a 92% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and $844.9 Millions in earning making it the 7th highest grossing films of the year.

6. Justice League - November 17, 2017

Zack Snyder brings the first team up of the DC Cinematic Assembly with Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ezra Miller as Flash and Jason Momoa as Aquaman. The film taken over by Joss Whedon after Zack Snyder opted out citing personal reasons was criticised for being awfully short and poor CGI. The movie received mixed reviews with some good action sequences and the cast performances earning it a 41% approval rating on Rotten tomatoes. The film earned a mediocre $647.2 Million.
