Finally a futuristic movie with no fancy flying cars! With 78 wins and 174 nominations including an Oscar for Best Writing and Original Screenplay, The Golden Globe and the Academy award of Science Fiction, Her is a undoubtedly a remarkable postmodern science fiction Her, essentially, revolves around the life of Theodore Twombly (Joaquan Phoenix), a lonely, desolate and talented writer who works in a firm called BeautifulHandwrittenletters.com. His job is to write letters on behalf of his customers to their loved ones. Keyboards have become obsolete, Life has become much dependent on technology and so we see Theodore dictating the words of his letters while the alphabets appear on the screen of his desktop (imagination much?).The movie is set in a not-so-distant Los Angeles which replicates a much enhanced version of today’s world. It lacks actual face-to-face human interactions, liveliness or ‘life’ and instead Jones’ paints a drearier scenario where in everyone in spite of being around each other is alone and preoccupied with their phones.(Scarier? but so relatable!)In the movie, our hero is in a post split up phase where his estranged wife Catherine(Rooney Mara) has left him. His life is as miserable as it could with anonymous phone sex chats with crazy kittens (literally!) to checking out pictures pregnant nude celebrities .All this points to his vulnerability and escapism. Then enters Samantha (Scarlette Johanson), an advanced operating system-cum-emotional partner that evolves into an intuitive, separate entity which grow through her experiences. Theodore’s fascination for his new operating system grows and ultimately he falls in love with his computer (wait! She is not just a computer). There are complex questions of corporeality that the movie raises. After all, it’s her voice that he falls in love, it’s her intellect that wooes her. There’s pure love and much more. Her is a visual treat!
Twelve Years a Slave is a yet another attempt to depict on-screen the unimaginable horrors of the institution of slavery. What sets the movie apart from other movies centered on slavery in the South such as Django Unchained or Gone With the Wind is its essence of stark truth. There is no Southern Gentlemen getting all noble (with exceptions of Master Ford played by the stunning Cumberbatch ) but a hard hit-on-face reality and inhuman system and an unforgettable shameful history of the so-called glorious American past. Sadism is depicted not as personal but very inherent in the whole system. What makes the plot so authentic is also the fact that it is based on true experiences of a free slave Solomon Northup who having kidnapped and forced into slavery, survives the brutalities and re attains his freedom and after twelve years reunites with his family .The narrative is as powerful as the acting of its remarkable cast and excellent capturing of its producer and director Steve Mcqueen. There are powerful scenes, harsh language and violence beyond imagination that leaves you dumbstruck and in disbelieve. It rips the inner child within you and grows him into extents inexplicable in short span of 2hours! It’s a must( and I stress on it) A MUST for your collection!
The Namesake, based on Jhumpa Lahiri’s iconic novel, is an immigrant intimate family saga spanning two generations . Mira Nair through her fine cinematography and her choice of outstanding prolific cast renders The Namesake a gripping experience for the audiences. A move from Calcutta to New York is not an easy one for Ashima(Tabu) who complying with the customs of the time (and of today of course! We are but slow movers) , moves in with her husband Ashok(Irfan) in New York. The movie captures the dilemma of an immigrant in a foreign land, and his struggles to belong to a place which he could call his own, his home. Ashoke and Ashima’s kids Gogol(Kal Penn) and Sonia(Sahira Nair)grow up as American as any of the Caucasian kid in their school, smoking pots ,hooking up and listening to rock music( a very clichéd picture indeed but that was 2006!).They embrace the Americanism around despising every bit of their homeland. Mira Nair, keeping up with her genre of cross cultural frictions, depicts the struggles of both the generations and their failed attempts at connecting and understanding each other. The namesake is spell binding in raising the real questions of the significance of one’s roots.Amidst all the seriousness, watching Gogol is like catching up a chat with one’s distant American cousin who goes on complaining about his fitting the dual roles of an Indian as well as an American. There is obvious occasional melodrama (not as melodramatic as the unbearable daily soaps) following the harsh tragedies, lows and highs of life. It’s a packet of real life human emotions of death, suffering, bereavement, of marriages (because hey! It’s still an Indian drama), of birth all in a 2 hour movie. Go for it if you are in the mood to watch something light yet deeply meaningful.
