It manages to impress (me, at least)
I have to say, I am pleasantly surprised with MTV. I didn't think they had it in them to pull off a massive show like this.

I read some of the Shannara books when I was in school and I was a huge fan of them until I started reading edgier fantasy like Tolkien's Lord of the rings, Silmarillion and George Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series.

Still, I was intrigued to discover that there was a new show based on the Shannara books in the works, and I got a chance to watch these episodes. Honestly, I don't remember many of the details from the books, but much of what I did see was pleasantly familiar, even if the way it is presented is different that what I used to imagine.

As some people have mentioned, there is definitely a strong "teen drama" feel at times, but there are enough "serious" moments to balance all of that out, especially once the awesome Manu Bennett graces the screen. And, after watching a bunch of shows like Game of Thrones, Spartacus, Vikings, etc. It's actually a mildly pleasant diversion that this show, in having the MTV "teen romance" feel sprinkled throughout, doesn't feel like every other gritty fantasy / historical show out there.

All of the actors seem to be of good quality, and the leads are likable enough (especially Miss Drayton). You also have veteran fantasy actors such as Manu Bennett and Jonathan Davis, both of whom were in the Lord of the Rings or the Hobbit series, to add some "fantasy credibility" to the show.

I can see where many people who are die-hard fans of the books would probably nitpick how some of the story elements are presented here, and I can definitely understand Game of Thrones alumni not appreciating the Twilight-esque moments, but in my opinion MTV has crafted one hell of a fantasy show that manages to hybridize two genres (fantasy and teen romance) in a way that doesn't feel cheap or gimicky, all in the trappings of a big-budget film franchise.

I am looking forward to more of it, and hopefully they will get a season 2 greenlighted, as well!

I have to admit when I really like a show, I do fall in love with it. As far as I can see, the acting is great, the writing is great, the characters are great, and the time period is very realistically portrayed. This is the 1950's. It is a very conservative America. Not as much in the political sense as in the cultural sense. This was before all hell broke loose in 1964-65. The Civil Rights Movement was taking place and gaining ground in the South, but this is white upper class America we are seeing. A white hospital with white doctors and white secretaries. Because that is the way it was then.

Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan are terrific as Masters and Johnson. There is a dual consideration to their relationship. They do have a professional relationship as Virginia Johnson is Dr. Bill Masters' Research Assistant. She is a woman with talents. Instinct, ambition, innovative with ideas and very good with people. Dr. Masters is the most talented Doctor in this teaching hospital, but he is a reserved, even repressed man. The two are exact opposites, and yet compliment one another professionally. They also compliment one another personally, as they take part themselves in the Sex Studies that Dr. Masters has begun in his study.

Lizzy Caplan is fabulous as she is sexy, intelligent, and complex. She is an ambitious woman, like a supremely interested and involved student, and is persistent in her goal of uncovering truths for the study and keeping the study and the office working and intact. She is unafraid, and knows she wants more out of her life. She has had a somewhat shady, unsteady life up until, apparently, taking this job, which changes her life. Lizzy Caplan has been said to have a "quirky sexiness" and that she has. She is also a terrific and "different" actress.

Michael Sheen as Dr. Bill Masters is also a driven person. Restrained personally, but unafraid to be a revolutionary, and even an outcast, in his prime love affair, the scientific study of human sexuality. BUT he also has a personal side that is calculating in getting what he wants, when he knows what he wants. In Season One, he does discover what he wants, both personally and professionally. I will say that without giving too much away.

A series with a grounding true story that blends heartache and jealousy, live with death, and everything in between.

Karan reviewed Lucifer
Surprising!!
I have been underwhelmed by most of the new shows in the past 12 months. Lucifer was a complete and welcome surprise. The interplay of the actors is completely natural for a cast that is new to each other. The casting of Ellis as Lucifer is perfect. Loved the soundtrack opening with Ain't No Rest for the Wicked by Cage the Elephant and finishing with Always Something by the same band. Doesn't hurt he's driving a classic black stingray convertible. I am hooked. So glad it is LA and not Vegas. I hope they can keep up the humor over a season and that it can keep from being patronizing or moralistic (which I suspect many of the negative reviewers would appreciate).

Karan reviewed Limitless
Remarkable
Limitless is a show based on a movie of the same name. They both live in the same universe in which a pill called NZT-48 unlocks the full potential of a subjects mind. This show manages to make interesting characters and plots, without losing the main idea of the show. The best part about this show, has to be the protagonist, Bryan Finch, played by Jake McDorman. The protagonist has a way of looking at things and portraying them to the audience that gives us some comedy relief that the movie didn't really have. That's also one of the strongest parts of the series, the comedy. I didn't really think this series was going to make me laugh or smile at how the character looks at things. And to make the series even better, they made an episode that was a total homage to Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

This is a truly remarkable series that will, if it continues this way, become a fan favorite over the years. Must watch for anyone who likes crime TV shows and comedy, this show blends them perfectly, making it one of the best TV shows on air right now.

Not up to expectation
I'm gonna confess. I was so excited for this show, even before its release, because I love Arrow and The Flash even more, I was almost certain I would love DC's Legends Of Tomorrow. Well, my expectations were a little bit too high, I can't say that I had that feeling as I had watching the first episode of Arrow and The Flash, but it's decent enough and I'm going to stick with this show to see where the plot is heading.

I loved the idea of using known characters, but unfortunately, I don't see much dynamic yet, but we're in the beginning, so we must be a little more patience. Time travel was other thing that caught my attention too, so that was the cause for my high expectations. Meanwhile, I felt the first episode kinda of rushed, the events, and even if I have a crush for parenting plots, I'm not sure if the Hunter's plot is strong enough to carry the first season.

Even so, I'm going to watch this show evolving and see if it can reach the level of Arrow and The Flash and also be an independent and solid show.
