Enganging and disturbing.

Ishiguro's dystopian novel has been beautifully transmuted to screen by video film-maker Mark Romanek. The harrowing feel of the novel has been kept intact and the whole effect of a final numbing of sensations is achieved at the end of the movie. The mystery around the Hailsham is kept intact by means of economical and intelligent script adapted from the novel. The blunt,event-less life at Hailsham, the shrouded knowledge of an unsure future is portrayed by the impassive expressions of the children and the monochrome uniforms. The atmosphere at Hailsham is shown in a somewhat sepia tone, almost as a premonitory aspect. The children at Hilsham are reared as any breed of animals whose lives are nurtured to sacrifice their organs as donors. The vacuum in their lives, the futility of their dreams and the precarious path to the hope for a future is what the film shows-and leaves us in a hallucinated, benumbed state.
