Zoya Akhtar and Reema Kagti’s Made in Heaven looks like a series about the glamorous and exciting life of the elite and the grandeur of typical big fat Indian weddings on the surface but the show has so much more to offer than just that. It leaves no stone unturned in displaying the ugly reality of the seemingly high and glamorous world of the elite, the class wars, inherent sexism, police brutality and homophobia in India. The juxtaposition of stories of the weddings planned by the two protagonists, Tara and Karan and their own lives have explored themes of loneliness, acceptance, betrayal, manipulation, and love beautifully. The characters’ flaws and desires are relatable, their plots are hard hitting and have an intense emotional impact and the monologues at the end of each episode by Shashank Arora (who plays Kabir) always leaves you thinking. The writing and the execution are pure excellence from the makers and the actors. If you’re looking for something binge-worthy that really makes you feel, Made in Heaven is a must watch.
