Judging by the credits, this was quite the Akhtar family affair. Farhan Akhtar stars as Vikram, a young actor trying to make it into Bollywood in Mumbai. The film is written by Zoya and Javed Akhtar and directed by Zoya.

Vikram gets his big break when Hrithik Roshan, basically playing himself as star Zaffar drops out as the lead in a film. So we get one item number by Hrithik. Vikram joins Nikki, the debut ingenue daughter of former Bollywood star Neena. Vikram plays off both Neena and Nikki, and struggles to keep his relationships with his bit actress girlfriend and his less successful friends.

I loved all the cameos in the film. It's chock full of Bollywood stars playing themselves, including Aamir Khan, Karan Johar and SRK.

The story of young actor makes it big and tramples on his friends and relationships on his way up is familiar, but there are unique twists when it's Bollywood. Zoya contrasts unknown unconnected Vikram to the pressures on Nikki as a child of a former star, as there is so much nepotism in Bollywood.

I thought Farhan Akhtar was really excellent as the unsure, and then cocky Vikram. Konkona Sen Sharma plays his girlfriend, Sona, who struggles to break past little bit parts. I liked that that there wasn't a happy ending for the pair and she has her own journey that has nearly as much screen time as Vikram's. She ends the film with her own dignity and measure of success, even if literally in the shadow of a huge billboard of now superstar Vikram.

Zoya obviously knows this whole world inside out, and I enjoyed this peek of life behind the scenes.
