Greta Gerwig’s 2019 Little Women is the adaptation of novel of the same name by Louis May Alcott. Oscar Nominated Little Women is a novel turned film directed by Greta Gerwig is the 6th one after previous versions came in 1917, 1918, 1933, 1949 and 1994. Each version portrays a different story of March sisters. The narrative revolves around Jo March and her sisters Meg, Amy and Beth in Massachusetts during 19th century. We get to know about the life of March Sisters where they are at their home with their mother and their father is off to fight in American Civil War. The four sisters are coming of age in the world where women have many limitations of what they could do. They are meant to marry a wealthy man to lead a happy and secured life and raise children. But Jo who is an aspiring writer rejects the idea of marriage and prefers to be a spinster. While Meg being the oldest and the most responsible kind among March sisters prefers stable love. Younger to Jo, there is Amy who attends school and have shown shallow and villain characteristics in few circumstances. Whereas Beth being the most saintly good one of the March family is too shy to go to school and taught at home and loves to play Piano for her family. The film also has character named Laurie, grandson of Mr. Laurence who is home tutored by Mr. John Brooke. Laurie met Jo at dance and later become friends leading to Marches and Laurences become family friends. The plot picks up when Meg gets married to John. And Laurie proposes to Jo. This film is a unique manifestation of hope, belief and rationality. As the film has achronological order unlike the previous versions, it was shot in different lighting to show different time period with warm yellow tone for their past life and cold blue tone for the present one. The way the four sisters interact with each other in rough and tumbled manner shows their interesting bond and chemistry. Gerwig has introduced the idea of author Louis May Alcott herself with Jo as the character to collapse the space and make it look what she actually had to go through being an author. The latest version of Little Women starring Saoirse Ronan as Jo, Timothée Chalamet as Laurie has been applauded by many and casting Laura Dern as Marmee March (mother of March sisters) and Meryl Streep as Aunt March (wealthy relative) has been considered as the master stroke as they can do no wrong. Gerwig gave the Amy’s character space to breathe and become more self-assured unlike the beginning where she was a grumpy child. The film is a real soul pleasing piece. Watching the family’s domestic struggles and still finding the best of every situation makes it worth a watch. So if you haven’t watched it yet, it’s available on Amazon Prime. Few of the most effective scenes are: • Before Meg’s marriage Jo gets really upset of getting distant from Meg and started convincing her to call off the marriage to which she replied, “Just because my dreams are different than yours doesn’t mean they’re unimportant.” • Amy’s speech to Laurie about marriage being an economic proposition is one of the most powerful scene. • The moment when Jo expressed about no one will be interested in a story of domestic struggles and joys on which Amy said, “Maybe it doesn’t seem important because people don’t write about them” • The emotional breakdown of Jo leads to scene where she told her mother about what women want and what they are capable of is too emotional yet strong. She said, “I just feel like, the women, they have minds and they have souls, as well as just hearts and they’ve got ambition and they’ve got talent as well as just beauty. And I’m so sick of people saying that love is just all a woman is fit for”
The Devil Wears Prada directed by David Frankel is a sitcom released in 2006 based on 2003 bestseller novel with same name by Lauren Weisberger based on her period as an assistant at Vogue. The film narrates the story of a young and just-graduate in journalism Andrea Sachs in search of job fortunately landed on second assistant position of merciless and powerful Miranda Priestly who is the chief editor of Runway Fashion Magazine. Andrea having zero sense of fashion took it as a temporary professional challenge to work as an assistant as she was told that if she lasts a year in the position she will get her pick of other jobs, perhaps even the journalistic position she truly craves for. The first assistant, Emily keeps pleasing Miranda and is condescending to Andrea. Due to lack of fashion sense, Andrea becomes the topic of mockery around the office. Andrea eventually bonds with art director Nigel who helps her to become perfect fit for the job and excel. However, her relationship with her boyfriend Nate, a chef and other college friends suffers due to the increasing time assisting Miranda and nearly doing impossible assigned tasks. Christian Thompson, an attractive young writer encountered with Andrea at some party openly flirts with her. The tough work rhythm left Andrea without a private life with Nate, family and friends. The rush morning scenes of New York street and chaos in the office every morning before Miranda arrives are interesting to watch. The mention of big expensive brands, huge events, fashion walk and photoshoot look too glamourous to take eyes off the screen. The glamorous portrayal makes you feel to work in such environment but will also show the other side of the coin. Andrea(Anne Hathaway) being the girl who doesn’t want to lose herself no matter how many pairs of Monolos and Jimmy Choo she can have in the beginning of the plot started liking the fashion industry and her glamorous work. The way the story shows the transformation Andrea had to go through to fit in, is pretty entertaining. Her dynamic with strict boss Miranda (Meryl Streep) is fun to watch as she stole the scene every time she is in it. The devil in ‘The Devil Wears Prada’, Miranda being a perfectionist and having traits of knowing what she wants and how she wants is too powerful that you wanted to have such persona. She is like role model for working women who is flawless and critical. Her quiet tone requires everyone to lean in to listen making her the most powerful in the room. She never raises her voice and quite mean and funny which is why there is no one more intimidating than her. Being the legend in fashion world, Miranda and Andrea have something in common, their self respect and self assurance. This film not only portrays passion for fashion but also give moral lessons one requires to excel in any industry, like being resourcefulness, wok ethics, resilience and commitment to go above and beyond your limits. So if you are in mood to watch some fashion centric movie with high pace, The Devil Wears Prada is the one for you.
After binge watching many supernatural teen drama shows, I started watching a show from my Amazon Pime’s suggestion One Tree Hill created by Mark Schwahn. It’s an American teen drama used to air on The WB and later on The CW . It has total 9 seasons running from 2003 to 2012. Basically the story is based in a fictional small town of Tree Hill, North Carolina about half brothers Nathan and Lucas Scott who are basketball players and rivals to each other. The show has character Peyton Sawyer with painting skills and really fine taste of music who is Nathan’s girlfriend and also the love interest of Lucas. There is a character named Brooke Davis who is the most popular girl of the school, captain of cheerleader team and Peyton’s best friend. There is the nerdy character of Hayley James who gives tuition and also is Lucas’s best friend. The story basically revolves around these main protagonists but there are many more characters whose parallel lives are shown like Dan Scott playing the villain dad, Keith Scott being the humble uncle, Karen being a single mom and running a café. The prominent themes of the show are basketball and romance. The theme mainly focuses on love, friendship, betrayal and the reason behind them. The series shows the mistakes teens mostly do in high school. This series shows a lot about what’s happening in the people’s life when the tournament is approaching. Being basketball as a core concept initially, the game mentioned less in later seasons to focus more on girls’ stories. But the sentiments for the game have always been there among the characters. The show also divided the audience between team Leyton(who root for Lucas and Peyton) and team Brucas(who root for Brooke and Lucas). The show also has power couple Nathan and Haley who has solid fan base. In the later season, you will also witness trinity friendship of Brooke, Peyton and Haley. One of the best thing about the show is introducing its audience to new music artists who later became the stars. Musical Guests like Gavin DeGraw, Sheryl Crow, Fall Out Boy, Tegan and Sara, Angels & Airwaves, Grace Potter, Michelle Featherstone, Nick Lachey, Kid Cudi and Augustan have been to the show for performing at the Trick. The story has been narrated by Chad Michael Murray(Lucas), Paul Johansson(Dan), Bethany Joy Lenz(Haley), Sophia Bush(Brooke) and Hilarie Burton (Peyton) in the course of time which is quite interesting as you get to witness different perspectives. The show dealt with important issues like drugs, peer pressure, gun culture, broken family and many more during the entire series. As a viewer you might feel like living with the character with their changing fortune in life. From keeping the audience on the edge of their seat during every basketball game to applaud-worthy witty comebacks to every statement, this series has it all. If you haven’t watched it, and a sucker for high school drama, this is your show.
