Why the new Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer should worry you

The new Batman v Superman trailer premiered on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live!' on the December 2 episode, hot on the heels of Marvel's 'Captain America: Civil War’ teaser launch. Warner Bros hoped to get one up on Marvel with such a move and the trailer has received significant buzz in addition to increasing the hype surrounding the movie. ‘Man of Steel’ was a highly anticipated reboot which polarized critics upon its release, with a majority of the criticism going towards the attempt at making Superman, who is generally depicted as a beacon of hope, dark and gritty like The Batman from Christopher Nolan’s trilogy. However, I personally loved the movie, with the Superman-Zod fight being my all-time favorite superhero action sequence. The fanboy in me was filled with delight at the release of the trailer, but after multiple viewings, the skeptic in me started rearing its slightly ugly head.

1. They’ve revealed too much

The 50 second teaser they’d released initially was brilliant. Check it out below-

However, with the new trailer, they’ve already revealed too much about the film. We know exactly what will happen in this film. Doomsday has been revealed to be the Big Bad this time around (more on that later) and although we know Batman and Superman WILL eventually team up, as this is the film that is setting the stage for the Justice League films, they needn’t have revealed it in the trailer, hence focusing on the ‘Dawn of Justice’ and instead should have focused more on ‘Batman v Superman’.

2. Jesse Eisenberg

When Jesse Eisenberg was cast as Lex Luthor there were a lot of skeptics, possibly due to his relatively young age as compared to Gene Hackman or Kevin Spacey who have played the character before. It could also be his filmography, which mostly consists of youth-oriented films or his hairdo which just looks weird. One of the skeptics went ahead and made this-
However, People were skeptical about Heath Ledger and Hugh Jackman before they took on what are probably their most iconic roles now, so I had initially decided to reserve my judgement until the release of the film. And it was recently revealed that he is Lex Luthor Jr. With the new trailer, all I’ve managed to glean from it is that Luthor Jr. is a high-pitched, geeky nerd who wants to play god. Rather than using the more conventional Luthor, who is serious, intimidating and a deadly businessman with hidden agendas, they’ve gone with this guy. Going against convention has worked before and for the sake of fans everywhere, I hope it works again, although I’m not too optimistic about it.

3. Doomsday

Admit it, we all saw this coming when we saw that Luthor had acquired Zod’s corpse in the previous trailer. When Batman and Superman realize they’re both on the same side in the face of a new threat, who better to pit them against other than Doomsday? He even killed Superman in the comics! What we were expecting was this-
What we got was this-
This is sort of like expecting The Hulk and getting John Cena. He looks like a cross between Abomination from 2008’s ‘The Incredible Hulk’ and Raphael from ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’. Come on! There have been rumors circulating that this is just his first form and he will evolve as the film progresses and the film’s production designer has teased a ‘Larger threat’ than Doomsday, but nothing has been confirmed yet, so I’m still skeptical.

4. A slightly talkative Batman

Now, Ben Affleck looks like the Batman we’ve all been waiting for. Christian Bale was good, so were Michael Keaton and Val Kilmer to an extent and who can forget the evergreen Adam West? However, Ben Affleck’s version looks a lot similar to the one in Frank Miller’s iconic ‘The Dark Knight Returns’ series from 1986, which is arguably the best Batman story ever drawn.
However, towards the end of the trailer a certain exchange between Superman and Batman occurs. When Wonder Woman appears, Superman asks the latter if she’s with him, to which the latter responds “I thought she was with you.” Now, the New 52 iteration of Batman might be a little more talkative than his predecessors, but I would’ve expected Batman to not say anything at all, at most reply with a curt “No.”. This has me wondering how true to the character the writers Chris Terrio and David S. Goyer have stayed. And the final shot of the trailer has Batman holding what seems like a shotgun.
However, this could easily be some non-lethal weapon from his arsenal. It does seem a bit out of character though, for him to stare down Doomsday like that. I would’ve expected him to just stand there with his fists clenched, looking all badass.
That’s it for now. Whether or not my fears are proved right, we’ll only find out come March. ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ releases March 25th, 2016. For those of you who haven’t seen the trailer yet, and for those of you who want to watch it again, here it is-
