At three years old, a chatty, energetic little boy named Owen Suskind ceased to speak, disappearing into autism with apparently no way out. Almost four years passed and the only stimuli that engaged Owen were Disney films. Then one day, his father donned a puppet—Iago, the wisecracking parrot from Aladdin—and asked “what’s it like to be you?” And poof! Owen replied, with dialogue from the movie. This documentary is heart-warming and wonderful. Owen Suskind lost his speech when he began to show signs of autism at three years old. His parents tried nearly everything, but they couldn't get back their child. He had an obsession with animated Disney movies, and one day, Owen's father tried talking to him using an Iago puppet, and Owen spoke back to him! It was a breakthrough.
The film chronicles the family's struggle to reach Owen, and culminates in his graduation, at age 23, to an independent living apartment, and getting his first job. Gilbert Godfried and Jonathan Freeman attended the premiere, and did some lines from Aladdin with Owen. He had to prompt them as they've... |
