Certain Women (2016)

This film is three short stories about women in the American West that intertwine. The pacing of the movie was very slow, but images and scenes from the film have really stayed with me. Laura Dern plays a lawyer with a client who can't understand why he can't sue for a work brain injury. Michelle Williams is building a house with her husband, but she's obviously the bread winner of the family. And Kristen Stewart is teaching a night class when a lonely rancher attends just to be around people. Lily Gladstone as the rancher steals the movie, which is quite a feat with these accomplished co-stars.

3 stories and 4 women. Nuri Bilge Ceylan, director of 'Once upon a time in Anatolia' had once said in an interview, "I think the human face is the most beautiful landscape. The face tells you everything. It's the only way to get to the truth because, most of the time, the words we say are not true. We have a tendency to deceive others to protect ourselves". This movie brings out moments in the protagonists' lives that are relatable because they are so commonplace. They are moments of wordless silence - a passing thought, a reflection or a realisation that is only expressed on the landscape of their faces.
