It consists of 24 episodes, 16 of which aired from September to December 2008. After a hiatus, it resumed on April 17, 2009 and concluded on May 15, 2009 with a two episode finale.

The two brothers escape prison in the first season, but are hunted down during the second season and ultimately recaptured and sent to a Panamanian jail, Penitenciaría Federal de Sona, at the end of the second season. The third season revolves around Michael's breakout from Sona with several other inmates. For the season, three characters are removed, and four new characters are added as series regulars. Dubbed the Fox River Eight, the group splits and members go their individual way, occasionally meeting up to help each other. They struggle to escape from the police while avoiding a secret group of multinationals called The Company, that wants them all dead. For the season, three characters are downgraded from series regular to recurring status, and a new character is introduced. The brothers, along with six other prisoners at Fox River State Penitentiary, manage to escape in the 21st episode of the season. In addition to the 22 regular episodes, a special, "Behind the Walls", was aired on October 11, 2005. A total of ten actors received star billing in the first season, with numerous supporting roles. Filming took place mostly in and around the Chicago area; Fox River was represented by Joliet Prison, which had closed in 2002. Critical reviews of the first season were generally favorable. Season one was released on DVD in Region One as a six-disc boxed set under the title of Prison Break: Season One on August 8, 2006.
